In the fall of 2003, Joy was looking for a surprise for her husband Chris
- a border collie puppy for his own, since Jadzia had bonded to her. While
this process often takes months, luck was on her side, and she got second pick
of a litter of three boy pups from a sheep/cattle farm in Bonanza, Oregon.
The weekend before Christmas was spent driving down to select and bring home
the puppy, already named Curzon Dax to match his sister Jadzia.
Curzon was exposed to flyball from the age of eight weeks onward, but did
not show much of an interest in it for several months. That all changed at
Jadzia's first tournament in March 2004, when Curzon figured out that
THIS is what the dogs had been practicing for, and really
wasn't it time to let him play? At the very next practice, Curzon showed
that he had learned well from example - he ran a perfect run the first time
he was given the opportunity, at just five months old. The remainder of his
first year was spent trying to slow him down to let him finish growing safely,
while still letting him play flyball at an appropriate level. Curzon debuted
at the Cascade Comets South of the Boo!der tournament on October 23, 2004 -
just two days after his first birthday.
Since his debut, Curzon has attended nearly every tournament that the club
has gone to with his sister Jadzia, thanks to a family willing to travel and
a club willing to run with him. He was once the fastest dog on the team, with
a personal best time of 3.91 seconds, and now runs an average of 4.5 seconds
after retraining to fix his too-fast-too-enthusiastic boxturn. With his long
legs, Curzon is at home on jump heights from 6" to 14", with hardly a change
in time between them. He was the second dog on the team to earn the Flyball
Master Champion and ONYX awards, and is happy to run on any speed team in
order to help his teammates earn their own titles. Curzon was also ranked
218th in the top 250 point-scoring NAFA dogs for the 2008 racing year.
Outside of flyball, Curzon competes in regional Dock Dogs events, practices
herding sheep at Fido's Farm, and does frisbee, agility, and obedience for fun.
He also enjoys herding the vacuum cleaner, leaf blower, and paper shredder, as
well as tugging on anything that another dog or human will hold for him, or
chewing on his younger sister Ezri. He lives in Bothell with his humans, his
sisters Jadzia, Phoebe, and Ezri, and two black cats.
